CBD Oil & Psoriasis: What’s The Connection?
Reading Time: 3 minutes
The list of ailments that can be treated with and managed by using CBD oil is growing daily. Psoriasis is one of these diseases, having surprising links to CBD oil and its effects on the body. At Miracle Balance, we want to give you a full rundown on how these two things interact so that you can know if our CBD oil could help you.
What Is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition that speeds up the life cycle of skin cells, resulting in layers of extra skin cells that form scales, scabs, and red patches across the body. The itchy and painful scales are often surrounded by inflammation and redness and can crack and bleed if the skin gets too dry.
Scales most commonly develop on joints, such as knees and elbows, but are able to form anywhere on the body, including the hands, feet, scalp, neck, and face.
Most people who have psoriasis experience ‘cycles’ of the disease, having periods of remission in between disease flare-ups. These flare-ups are triggered by several different things, including:
- Certain Medication
These triggers often work together when causing a flare-up. For example, a change in weather might not cause any response, but if combined with stress, it will lead to a flare-up.
Traditional Psoriasis Treatment
While consulting with their physicians, patients with psoriatic disease have found that holistic approaches to treatment work the best. Any form of treatment that helps alleviate even the smallest of symptoms improves their overall well-being and is considered worthwhile investing in.
Since there is no cure for the condition, treatment revolves around managing the symptoms. Many traditional treatments will either lose effectiveness over time or result in a build-up of unwanted side effects.
This is where CBD oil comes in…
CBD Oil As Psoriasis Treatment
The Skin Cell Life Cycle
The Journal of Dermatological Science published a study in 2007 that found that CBD oil may offer relief to psoriasis patients by slowing the rate of skin cell growth – the root cause of psoriasis.
Another study done in Italy during 2019 showed that topical CBD-enriched ointment could help reduce the effect that psoriasis had on the skin. This leads to CBD oil massage being a promising treatment for psoriasis sufferers.
Inflammation begins as part of the body’s normal healing process. When a person has psoriasis, however, the inflammation doesn’t have a stopping point.
One of the clearest ways in which CBD oil can help with psoriasis treatment is by helping reduce inflammation throughout the body. CBD oil interacts with the body’s TRPV1 receptor, initiating an anti-inflammatory response and preventing further damage caused by prolonged inflammation.
Psoriasis is often uncomfortable and painful. CBD oil has been used for pain management for years, by activating and inactivating different compounds associated with pain regulation in the body. For example, CBD can inhibit anandamide absorption. The increased levels of anandamide in the blood can reduce the pain a person feels.
A particular use of CBD oil to combat psoriasis pain involves psoriatic arthritis – a form of psoriasis which results in painful, swollen joints similar to those caused by arthritis. This causes stiffness and joint damage. CBD oil helps keep the mobility of psoriatic arthritis patients, which can prevent permanent deformity, by managing their pain levels and allowing them to move and function as normal.
Since stress can trigger psoriasis flare-ups, anything that helps manage stress will hugely benefit psoriasis patients. CBD oil does this by encouraging neural regeneration – which counteracts the ill effects that prolonged stress has on the brain. By countering these effects, the body can begin to heal from stress, and then from stress-induced psoriasis.
While there is still much research to be done, CBD oil is a promising treatment for psoriasis and may be the perfect fit for your disease management plan.
